Greetings from Dunsmuir!

Dear Friends and Family,
Toward the end of June, Dana AKA BizBabe (the Business Services Manager and member of the Senior Staff), Marcia, LadyBee (the Burning Man Art Curator) and I went on a field trip to Dunsmuir, California. Dunsmuir is an hour south of Oregon near the base of Mt. Shasta, right in the heart of gorgeous Northern California timber land. It is also the home of artist Finley Fryer.

Finley makes beautiful stained glass-like art installations out of translucent plastic pieces. In 1998 and again in 2001, he brought the two story Plastic Chapel to the playa. In 1999, he brought Stan, or Submerging Man, a 20 foot tall diver made of multicolored plastic records.

Since the Café evolved to its existing structure in 2000, a large art installation has been used at the main portal entry facing out toward the Man. Through LadyBee and the art department, we learned that Finley had an large archway that he wanted to bring to the playa in 2002. This seemed like a potentially perfect match, so we trekked up to Dunsmuir to ooh and ahh, compare measurements, and discuss lighting and other technical issues. OK, there was also a fair amount of thrift shopping, swimming and giggling too!
