Greetings from a very wet playa!

Dear Friends and Family,
On the way back to San Francisco, we stopped for a required peek and to pay our respects to the playa.

The playa was a prehistoric lake bed once upon a time. Recent heavy rains and snows have left the playa a little mushy in places, and soaking wet in others. As it gets wet during the winter months, the surface of the playa self-corrects, removing any traces of previous visitors or even temporary cities. This was one of the reasons that the site was selected for Burning Man.

Black Rock Desert lore says that this high volume of water over the winter months is a good sign that the playa surface will be hard packed and relatively dust free come August. This would be a welcome change after the cronic dust baths during the event in 2001.
